I received this book from my last ever Stationary Geekette Box. Rachel Vincent is not an author I had read before but I may have to correct that.
Synopsis
There’s no turning back…In the town of New Temperance, souls are in short supply and Nina should be worrying about protecting hers. Yet she’s too busy trying to keep her sister Mellie safe. When Nina discovers that Mellie is keeping a secret that threatens their existence, she’ll do anything to protect her. Because in New Temperance, sins are prosecuted as crimes by the brutal church. To keep them both alive, Nina will need to trust Finn, a mysterious fugitive who has already saved her life once. Wanted by the church and hunted by dark forces, Nina knows she needs Finn and his group of rogue friends. But what do they need from her in return?
The synopsis makes this book sound okay but it is so much better then that. The story follows Nina a girl living in a post apocalyptic world. After a war with demons that use humans as host only a few major cities are left and the church is in charge. They have very strict rules and harsh punishments if disobeyed but they keep everyone safe behind their walls but do they? When Nina discovers her sister has committed a major sin her world begins to unravel. As she tries to protect her sister from the church and their mother Nina discovers everything isn’t what it seems.
I really enjoyed this book. Nina is a bit slow at times which is annoying as I felt like screaming in frustration with how long it took her to put two and two together. However she is strong and brave. She cares deeply for her sister and the safety of others. The group of exorcists Nina joins are a bit of a stereotypical group but there dynamics are great and you can tell they care for each other. Finn was a unique and interesting character. I hope to find out more about his exsistence in the sequel. I need to order the next one soon. I am really hoping for a happy ending but I really can’t see how that can happen.
